Many adoptable cats and dogs are listed in the new Adoptable Animal Forums, please visit and spread the word that there are so many cute faces still waiting for homes.

    Karen,

what you’re are doing is just brilliant!

I went to boarding school with Koreans and, yes, our culture differs in view regarding animals.

I live in Sydney, but if I can be of any help, please contact me.

    Hi Anna,

    Thank you for commenting.

I’d like to know more about your opinions on the different cultural views of animals (Korean and Australian). It’s a sensitive topic here and it’s difficult to talk about from a “Western” point of view without the tinge of cultural imperialism. Still, I think it’s a discussion that needs to happen so that animal welfare can progress.

    All the best,
    Karen

    Hello Karen,

I just found your site from watching your video about rescuing Sunny on youtube. I have an Animal News site and would be interested in starting a page on Korea and perhaps you might be interested in helping forwarding information. Great site by the way.

    Jeff

    Hi Jeff,

Wow, you’ve collected a lot of information on your website! I would love to help you add info from Korea. I’ve sent you an e-mail, but I have a gmail account so please check your bulk folder. Yahoo sends gmail to the spam box and people haven’t been receiving my replies.

    Dear Karen ,

Sorry for not responding earlier , but I do keep up with reading your stories . I know how you feel about helping these Korean animals , I feel the same way and within 8 months my husband and I adopted 3 cats and 3 dogs to save them from cruelty.

We have rescued several dogs in Andong, the city we lived in before . Our house was very small, just 2 rooms, but it didn’t stop me from fostering them and giving them a new home. Daejeon seems to have even more animal problems, and I am willing to help you in the future with a donation of whatever I can afford. Keep up the good work!

  8. Karen says —

    Hi Louise,

Thank you for your comments. I really appreciate that you share your stories here, because I like reading what you are doing, too. It inspires me that you can have such a big heart to take in so many animals. I’m so impressed!

I’m happy to meet other animal-loving people like you. We really must get together soon.

    Take care.

    Hey Karen,
I’m a Korean born in Quebec, Canada and I am so grateful oyu are putting the time and effort to doing all of this. Last year, th day after Christmas, my family lost our dog which we adopted from off the streets. We misss having a dog in our lives so much and would REALLy appreciate any help as to any information about exporting jindos out of Korea ( I have relatives that can help with the exporting) or any breeders in Ontario (as I have family there as well) or in the rest of Canada or even the US (anywhere near the border) please help!!!!!
    Thank you again

    Andrea,

I’m so sorry to hear about the loss of your dog. That must be very painful for you. I hope you find another wonderful dog who will enjoy living with a family full of so much love.

I’m sorry that I still don’t have much information about exporting Jindos. I haven’t gotten a reply to the email I sent to KAPS, and I can’t read Korean well enough to understand Korean websites, unfortunately.

If you have relatives in Korea that can help you export dogs, I’d suggest you ask them to contact the Korea Kennel Club http://www.kkc.or.kr/ to find out about exporting rules and to find a reputable breeder.

Here’s a good description of the difference between “reputable” and “backyard” breeders: http://www.jlhweb.net/Boxermap/reputablebreeder.html

I have visited a place in Korea that was the furthest thing from reputable (I saw a dead puppy on the ground, and the worst conditions ever). This place had a “Malamute Club” sticker on the door. If your relatives do contact a breeder, make sure they visit them and actually see the dogs.

If you would prefer to adopt, Jin-Sohl Jindo Dog Rescue is located in Southern California. They’re website is: http://www.jindo-dog-rescue.org/ They have one really cute guy listed there right now, and may know of other rescuers in other parts of North America.

    Hope this helps,
    Karen

I found a puppy in Itaewon some one lost or let go. He has a flea collar but the identification is missing. I can not take care of him the way a puppy needs care, I live at K 16 in the barracks I am a soldier and need to find him a home. is their anyway you can help me??
    Thank you
    Mario

  13. Karen says —

    Hi Mario,

Thank you for caring about this lost puppy. Since you can’t foster him, I would suggest bringing him to the Chung Wha Animal Clinic in Itaewon. They take in stray animals and find new homes for them. Their English website and contact information is here: http://www.cwhospital.com/ At least one if not all of the vets there speak English.

If you can hold onto him until a foster home can be found, then you could post his picture and story in the forums here, or in the adoptable animals sections (both require separate registration).

I wish I could take him in myself, but I’m headed to China tomorrow for a one-week trip.

I hope this information is helpful to you. If you have other questions, please post them in the forum since I don’t know how much Internet access I will have this week.

    Take care,
    Karen

What a wonderful service. So glad you’re keeping up with it even though you’re no longer in Korea.

I have just launched a new info website for expats in Korea (Yes, another one - but I hope that Korea4Expts will stand out and become the one-stop info site for foreign resident and visitor.

I would like to put your link on the site. We are currently working on a limited number of links that will appear on the bottom of the home page and would like to include yours amongst them.

  16. Karen says —

    Hi Anne,

Thanks so much for your kind words. Sorry for the very late reply, I’ve been moving house.

I would Love to have a link on your site, which looks awesome. I wish I were in a place where I could join your Bhutan trip! I will add your site’s link to my sidebar as well.

Thanks so much for the help.

Dear Karen, On behalf of a number of animal lovers, I wish to express our gratitude to you for fighting a lone battle against animal cruelty. It is stunning to everybody that a technologically advanced Country like S>Korea also breeds dog eating monsters. We are with you, in your effort all the way. Anything we cal do, pl let us know. God will bless you. A.R.Mahendra,69,Rose Brioer Drive, Rochester Hills,MI.USA, 48309

  18. Karen says —

    Hello A R Mahendra,

I seem to have missed your comment until now. Thank you so much for your encouraging and supportive words. Though I don’t agree with all the terminology you use, I do understand where your feelings are coming from.

Luckily through this site I’ve been able to meet many people, both Korean and non-Korean, who share the same feelings against animal cruelty and we’ve been able to work together and support each other’s work. Please visit the links section to see the many Korean organizations working hard to end the dog/cat meat trade and other animal abuses. The language barrier often makes it difficult for Westerners to realize that there is a significant group of Korean animal lovers fighting for the improvement animal welfare conditions within Korea.

Thank you again for taking the time to comment. Any further advice, tips, strategies, fundraising ideas, rescue stories, or words of support you could share will always be most welcome.

    Karen

Are there any ‘lost and found’ websites for pets (of Korean and foreign owners) in Seoul?

As a voluntary service to a cat shelter, I’m taking care of a beautiful persian cat that was found in the street.
I find it strange that nobody has claimed it so far. It’s definately not an alley cat. It looks like one that used to compete in shows and got a lot of grooming.

Where can I check if anybody lost a persian cat that looks like the one that’s at my home right now?

  22. Karen says —

    Hi Margaret,

Yes there are some lost and found sites in Korea. The ones that I know of are listed here:

And tips on how to find the owner are here:

We have two American Eskimo and wish to take a long (3 week) holiday overseas.

We have not been able to find a boarding kennel that would be suitable for dogs of this (medium) size.

Does anyone know of a suitable kennel anywhere in Korea that provides longer term boarding?

    Regards,
    Mark

  24. Karen says —

    Hi Mark,
I’m not sure what city you’re in, but you could try looking for a pet sitter near you. You can register and post in the Pet Sitters forum on AnimalRescueKorea.org.

There’s also a little info on a boarding facility in Seoul in this thread. If you post your questions there maybe someone will have more specific details now.

    Good luck!

    Hi there,
I would like to help by sending toys and treats. I work at a dog boutique and I can help with toys, treats, etc. I recently adopted a Jindo/Pit Bull mix and I can honestly say it was one of the best decisions that I have made. Please let me know if I can do this for you. Have a great day!
    Cristina
